Sustainable Tile and GreenGuard Certified Porcelain at Bedrosians

Bedrosians Tile & Stone carries tile and porcelain slab collections produced by manufacturers that hold independent environmental certifications, including GreenGuard, Green Squared (ANSI A138.1), and U.S. Green Building Council recognition. These certifications are held at the product or facility level by the manufacturers Bedrosians partners with, and they cover specific attributes like low chemical emissions, responsible raw material sourcing, and reduced environmental impact during production.

This page covers which Bedrosians collections carry these certifications, what each certification means, and how they fit into residential and commercial projects.

Magnifica Porcelain Slab: GreenGuard Certified, Made in the USA

Magnifica porcelain slab is Bedrosians' flagship large-format porcelain line and the centerpiece of the brand's sustainability story. It was the first 2cm porcelain slab manufactured in the United States when it launched in 2019, and select colorways continue to be made in the USA.

What makes Magnifica different:

  • GreenGuard certified for low chemical emissions
  • Produced in a GreenGuard-certified manufacturing facility
  • Made with recycled content and 100% natural materials
  • Zero VOCs (volatile organic compounds)
  • Available in 12mm and 2cm thicknesses, with slab formats up to 120×60
  • Backed by a 10-year limited warranty

GreenGuard certification means that Magnifica has been independently tested and verified by UL Solutions to meet strict limits on chemical emissions. That makes it suitable for environments where indoor air quality is a priority, including schools, healthcare facilities, offices, and homes with children or sensitive individuals.

Magnifica's active colorways include Encore, Encore Luxury, Nineteen Forty-Eight (named after Bedrosians' founding year), ERA, The Thirties, White Plane, and Statuarietto Polished.

What These Certifications Mean

Not all sustainability labels cover the same ground. Here is what each certification referenced on this page measures.

GreenGuard (UL Solutions)

GreenGuard certification is administered by UL Solutions, a global safety science organization. Products that earn GreenGuard certification have been tested in controlled environments and verified to meet strict limits on chemical emissions, including VOCs, formaldehyde, and particulates. The testing protocol simulates real indoor conditions to measure what a product releases into the air over time.

GreenGuard-certified products can contribute to LEED credits and are accepted by green building programs including CHPS (Collaborative for High Performance Schools) and the Green Guide for Healthcare.

Green Squared (ANSI A138.1)

Green Squared is the tile industry's own multi-attribute sustainability standard, developed by the Tile Council of North America (TCNA). It goes beyond emissions testing to evaluate the full lifecycle of a tile product: raw material extraction, manufacturing energy and water use, recycled content, end-of-life recyclability, and the manufacturer's labor and social practices.

Products certified under Green Squared have been independently verified by third-party bodies like UL Environment, NSF International, or SCS Global Services. Green Squared-certified products qualify for LEED v4.1 credits under the Building Product Disclosure and Optimization category.

U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC)

The USGBC administers the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating system, the most widely used green building certification program in the world. Products recognized by the USGBC meet criteria that support healthier, more efficient buildings. USGBC-certified products can contribute directly to LEED project credits.

How Certified Tile Fits Into Your Project

For homeowners

Tile is one of the largest surface areas in a kitchen, bathroom, or living space. Choosing tile with verified low emissions means fewer chemicals off-gassing into your home's air. This matters most in enclosed rooms like bathrooms without windows, basements, and nurseries.

Porcelain tile is already one of the lowest-maintenance, longest-lasting flooring options available. When that porcelain is also GreenGuard certified and made with recycled content, as Magnifica is, the environmental benefit extends over the full life of the installation. A tile floor that lasts decades generates less waste than flooring that needs replacing every 10 to 15 years.

For designers, architects, and commercial specifiers

If your project is pursuing LEED certification, specifying Green Squared-certified or GreenGuard-certified tile can contribute to multiple credit categories, including Building Product Disclosure and Optimization (MR Credit) and Low-Emitting Materials (EQ Credit).

Bedrosians' Architects & Designers Program pairs you with a dedicated outside rep who can pull certified product specs for your submittals. The National Account Concierge program handles commercial-scale sourcing for multi-site rollouts where certified materials are part of the specification.

For contractors

Tile produced with low silica content, like Nouvel mineral surface, reduces exposure risk during cutting and fabrication. OSHA's permissible exposure limit for respirable crystalline silica is 50 micrograms per cubic meter, and specifying lower-silica materials is a practical step toward compliance and crew safety. Bedrosians' Contractor Program includes access to certified product through any of the 44 branch pro counters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is all Bedrosians tile GreenGuard certified?

No. GreenGuard certification applies to specific product lines, not the entire Bedrosians catalog. Magnifica porcelain slab and Wave porcelain tile are the GreenGuard-certified collections currently available. The certifications listed on this page are scoped to individual products and manufacturing facilities.

Can GreenGuard-certified tile help my project earn LEED credits?

Yes. GreenGuard-certified products can contribute to LEED credits in the Low-Emitting Materials category (EQ Credit). Green Squared-certified products, like Blue Run porcelain, qualify under the Building Product Disclosure and Optimization category (MR Credit). Your project's LEED consultant can confirm which credits apply to your specific scope.

Does Bedrosians manufacture its own tile?

Bedrosians is primarily an importer and distributor. The company designs collections in-house and partners with manufacturers around the world to produce them. Magnifica porcelain slab is produced domestically, with select colorways made in the USA. Blue Run and Farmhouse Living porcelain are also manufactured in the United States. The environmental certifications on this page are held by the manufacturing facilities and verified by independent third parties.

What does "no VOCs" mean for Magnifica?

VOCs (volatile organic compounds) are chemicals that off-gas from building materials into indoor air. Common sources include adhesives, paints, and some flooring products. Magnifica porcelain is manufactured with zero VOCs, meaning it does not release these compounds into your indoor environment after installation. This is independently verified through the GreenGuard certification process.
