Best tile for a non-slip shower floor

A shower floor is its own buying decision, with different conditions from the floor you walk on around the room. Shower floors are sloped, they stay wet longer, and under the current ANSI framework they fall outside the simple interior-wet category. Sloped and severe wet conditions are handled as a manufacturer-declared "wet plus" classification instead of a fixed number, and inclined surfaces sit outside the standard's flat-floor categories altogether.

You will sometimes see a shower-floor figure of 0.50 to 0.60 wet DCOF quoted online. Treat that as practitioner shorthand rather than a current published requirement. The more reliable approach is to look for a tile the manufacturer has confirmed as suitable for shower floors or severe wet use, then reinforce that with format and installation.

Small-format tile is the practical and safe choice here. PEI and R-ratings are not slip-resistance ratings

Two ratings often get mistaken for slip safety. Knowing what each one actually measures keeps you from choosing a tough or high-rated tile and assuming it is grippy.

PEI measures wear, not grip

The PEI rating, measured by the ASTM C1027 abrasion test, tells you how well a glazed tile surface resists visible wear from foot traffic. It says nothing about slip resistance.
