A Fresh, Functional Bathroom for Growing Personalities

Designing for pre-teens means striking a delicate balance—creating a space that feels fresh and fun, yet timeless enough to grow with them. For this bathroom transformation, Sara Horowitz of Rose & William Interiors approached the project with exactly that intention: elevated, functional design rooted in real life.

Project Vision: Bright, Balanced, and Built to Last

This bathroom was designed for two pre-teens, which meant the space needed to feel personal, functional, and adaptable over time.

Instead of leaning heavily into bold color, Sara created a light, layered palette that feels playful through texture and material rather than trend-driven hues.

Materials That Made the Space

The material palette is where this project truly shines—each selection working together to create depth without overwhelming the space.

Tile Selections:

Marin Penny Tile in Sand Dollar — used in the shower floor for texture + slip resistance
Cloe 5x5 Wall Tile in White — high-gloss finish adds light and soft variation
Sahara 12x24 Field Tile in White — grounds the space with a clean, durable foundation

Solving for Real Life

Beyond aesthetics, this design was driven by how the space needed to function day-to-day.

✔️Individual Space

Two separate vanity zones give each child a sense of ownership—something that will only become more important over time.

✔️Smart Layout + Privacy

The bathroom was reconfigured so the vanity area and shower/toilet can be used simultaneously—a major upgrade for busy mornings.

✔️Bringing Light Back In

Closing off the layout meant sacrificing natural light, so Sara introduced a skylight—a simple but impactful solution that keeps the vanity area bright and open.

The vanity wall is the standout.

Between the playful mosaic band, warm wood tones, and sculptural sconces, it creates a moment that feels both elevated and approachable. It’s a perfect example of how subtle detail can completely transform a space.

Sara is especially drawn to the shift toward organic, intuitive interiors—spaces that feel warm, grounded, and effortlessly livable.

She’s also loving the way tile and stone are being used more intentionally—whether as a full statement or a quiet, integrated detail.
