12mm is the current industry standard for indoor countertop applications. It's lighter, easier to install, and more affordable per slab. 2cm is the stronger pick for outdoor kitchens, kitchen islands with long unsupported overhangs, and any project where exposed edges need to look like solid stone without fabrication tricks.

The Factor Most People Care About First: Edge Treatment
This is the single biggest practical difference between the two thicknesses, and it's the one that usually tips the decision.
A 12mm slab is about half an inch thick. To get the look of a traditional countertop (that 2- to 3-inch stone edge you see in kitchens), fabricators have to cut the edge at a 45-degree angle and bond a separate strip of porcelain underneath. This is called a mitered edge. When done well, it looks seamless. But the process is labor-intensive, requires precise diamond-saw work, and creates an adhesive joint along the entire perimeter that can potentially separate over time if cabinetry shifts or settles.
A 2cm slab with throughbody veining doesn't need any of that. "Throughbody" means the pattern and color run through the full depth of the slab, not just on the surface. When a fabricator cuts a 2cm slab and polishes the edge, the exposed side already looks like solid stone. A simple eased or rounded edge profile is all it takes. No mitering, no bonding, no adhesive joints.

Which Thickness for Kitchen Countertops?
For a standard kitchen perimeter where countertops sit flat on base cabinets without significant overhangs, 12mm works well. It's lighter, puts less stress on cabinetry, and the mitered edge can produce a clean, traditional look.
For kitchen islands, especially large ones with bar seating that overhangs the cabinet base, 2cm is the safer choice. A 12mm slab without reinforcement is generally limited to about 6 inches of unsupported overhang. With mesh backing, that stretches to roughly 12 inches. A 2cm slab can handle significantly longer cantilevers without additional bracing, behaving more like traditional 3cm granite.
The other consideration for islands: impact resistance. A 2cm slab's breaking strength (typically above 2,000 lbs-force, compared to around 1,300 lbs-force for 12mm) makes it more forgiving when someone bumps a barstool into the counter edge or drops a cast-iron skillet.

12mm is the standard here, and there's usually no reason to go thicker. Bathroom vanities take less impact than kitchen counters, and the lighter weight of 12mm works better on wall-mounted vanity units. The thinner profile paired with a mitered drop-edge also suits the sleek, minimal look that most modern bathroom designs are after.

The issue isn't the porcelain itself. Both thicknesses are frost-resistant, UV-stable, and essentially impervious to water (porcelain absorbs less than 0.5% moisture, far below what would cause freeze-thaw damage). But the substrate underneath is the problem.
A 12mm countertop needs a plywood or backer board substrate. Outdoors, that wood substrate is exposed to humidity, rain, and temperature swings that cause it to warp, swell, and eventually rot. When the substrate moves, rigid porcelain cracks.
A 2cm slab has enough structural rigidity to install directly on masonry block framing or metal supports, bypassing wood entirely. For outdoor flooring and patios, 2cm porcelain pavers can even be dry-laid on compacted gravel or set on adjustable pedestal systems with no poured concrete needed.
Which Thickness for Walls, Backsplashes, and Fireplace Surrounds?
12mm is the clear choice for any vertical surface. It's lighter (roughly 6 to 8 lbs per square foot, compared to 9 to 11 lbs for 2cm), which puts far less stress on wall framing and thin-set adhesive. A 2cm slab on a wall introduces enough dead load to require structural reinforcement in most framing scenarios, adding cost and complexity that rarely makes sense.

Mitering a 12mm slab to create the look of a thicker edge adds meaningful fabrication cost per linear foot, and that adds up quickly across a full kitchen perimeter. A 2cm slab with through-body veining needs only a standard eased edge, which keeps fabrication simpler and more affordable. How Porcelain Compares to Quartz and Natural Stone

Both thicknesses require experienced fabricators. Porcelain is harder than most slab materials and cuts differently than natural stone. Fabricators who primarily work with softer surfaces may need to adjust their tooling, feed rates, and blade speeds. Ask your fabricator about their porcelain slab experience before committing.
Weight matters for installation logistics. A full 2cm slab (63" x 126") weighs roughly 470 to 510 lbs. Moving it safely requires at least four people and a specialized carrying frame with vacuum suction cups. Make sure your fabricator and installer have the right equipment.
